Everyone interprets things differently and it's exciting when so much is left to the imagination. You get to make up what you think is happening, or why something is the way it is.
I still remember going to an art gallery for the first time. It was a field trip in elementary school. I came across a mixed media piece that looked 3/4's finished. I remember asking my teacher "why would they put the art up if it wasn't done?" I couldn't understand why they would have done that. That was my first introduction to expression through art.
So what's with the picture?
I would say that it is missing quite a few things that a photograph usually contains, for example a dominant focal point. But I also think that is why I have stared at this photo time and time again. How can something so simple and empty entertain my thoughts for so long? Even though I took the photo and I know where it was taken, I know what the temperature was like that day, and I know what was beyond that hill, I now look at the picture with a completely fresh mind. I forget my experience of taking the photo,
and look at it just as you are now.
